STYLE: The Off The Shoulder Trend

All you have to do is open your Instagram feed to see pictures of bloggers, new clothes collection arrivals, designer collaborations, and celebrities wearing bardot tops, and/or writing about the latest trend of off the shoulder clothing. It’s clearly evident that this sophisticated trend has come back in fashion this Spring/Summer season and shows no signs of disappearing anytime soon…

You might be thinking something along the lines of ‘yeah, so what sets this blog post apart?’ or ‘I’ve seen this trend numerous times’… so instead of simply writing about this trend, I’m going to share my favourite styling tips and how to incorporate this trend into your everyday personal style. I hope you find it useful and I’d love to hear your own styling thoughts in the comments below. Enjoy! 🙂

The Classic

The bardot top is a versatile Spring/Summer wardrobe staple, and this year is no exception. I love how this off the shoulder blouse has been styled with a retro maxi denim skirt, nude heels, an iconic bandana and classic shades. Together these classic styles create a retro inspired Spring & Summer outfit, perfect for a day out with the girls, a picnic date, and/or a stroll along the beach boardwalk, to name a few… For a more relaxed vibe, swap your heels with lace up flats or espadrilles.

The Elegant

Some people have mixed feelings when it comes to block colours, however when styled correctly, they can create an elegant look, perfect for a romantic dinner date, a work function, and international fashion weeks, to name a few… I love how Olivia Palermo has styled a burgundy off the shoulder blouse with a matching skirt with delicate cut outs, minimalist neutral accessories and statement reflector shades. If you’re looking for a way to dress this look down for a more low key occasion, I’d suggest swapping heels for a pair of iconic espadrilles (for more shoe styling tips, click here), and tying your hair back into a messy bun or low ponytail.

The Minimalist

If you’re looking for a subtle way of incorporating the off the shoulder trend into a more minimalist wardrobe, I’d suggest pairing a more subdued neutral hue bardot shirt with fine jewelry and loose wavy locks. For a pop of colour, I’d suggest pairing the look with bright and bold accessories (think handbags, phone cases, sunglasses, etc)…  The beauty of a neutral design leaves the wearer with endless styling options. If you’re off to lunch with girlfriends, I’d suggest flat gladiator style sandals and bright accessories, whereas if you’re off to a work function, I’d suggest a top knot hairstyle with sleek monochrome accessories and nude or coloured heels.

The City Chic

If you’re trying to create a ‘lived in’ feel, I’d suggest a classic nautical stripe or fisheye lace bardot top, with light wash denim, comfortable shoes and a no-fuss hairdo. When it comes to accessories, your options are endless… If you’re off to explore the trendy food trucks, I’d suggest statement shades and comfortable shoes – whether it be statement flats or sneakers (click here to read the Spring shoe edit post), and practical accessories – a bucket bag will fit all your everyday essentials plus whatever else you’ll need for the venue and works perfectly with the look.* Whereas if you’re looking for a day of exploring the city or clothes shopping, you might prefer a pair of comfortable (and chic) espadrilles or platform brogues…

*If you’re in search of a new everyday handbag that is fashionable, comfortable and fits all your everyday essentials – then the bucket bag is for you. You can read my favourite styling tips and brands in my 2016: The Year of The Bucket Bag post here.
