Over the past few years Autumn has become my favourite season… there’s something so lovely and hygge about the crisp warm toned leaves, layering up, a cool breeze on a nature trail, warming beverages, and more… so this week I thought I would share 10 Autumn Hygge activities to try this season! I hope you enjoy reading it and find the inspiration you’re looking for.
#1 – Spend Time Outdoors
Whilst some days are quite chilly as Autumn progresses into Winter, the beginning of the season is a wonderful (not to mention beautiful) time to explore nature. I love the crunchy warm orange and caramel leaves falling and the pinecones on hiking tracks in the countryside. You might like to invite some friends or family along, pack a picnic and make a day of it.
#2 – Add Some Cozy Blankets & Pillows to your Living Space
Whilst we all tend to have 101 warm and chunky knits and sweaters around this time of year, you can also add more coziness to your home with some new knit throws and textured pillows to accessorise your sofa. You don’t have to spend a small fortune either, after all Hygge is about making a space feel welcoming and warm; whatever that looks like for you. Sounds like the dream cozy night in set-up to me – add some Netflix & Chill or a good novel, and autumn scented candles and I’m there!
#3 – Light Some Autumn Scents
Something I’d love to try as the weather cools down this Autumn & Winter is to light more “Fall” scented candles. I adore the richer and muskier scents like warm spices, cinnamon, pachouli, and co… I think they create a warm, cozy and very hygge atmosphere in your home.
#4 – Cooking: Get Creative in the Kitchen
With all this extra time spent indoors (depending on the weather forecast where you live), you might like to get creative in the kitchen and set aside some time to try and recreate those warming recipes you’ve saved on Pinterest (for a rainy day – no pun intended) or a recipe book on your bookshelf you haven’t leafed through for a while… add some chill tunes and invite a friend or two over to your place, and you’ve created a hygge cooking day or evening.
#5 – Go Apple or Pumpkin Picking
This is another lovely and unique activity I’m eager to try in Autumn 2019. I’ve seen a number of bloggers and vloggers overseas share their experiences through gorgeous posts online, and it all sounds so enjoyable! After doing a bit of research online and you still can’t find anywhere nearby, a trip to your local farmer’s market is just as rewarding. After a fun (and oh so photogenic) day spent apple or pumpkin picking, you’ll have lots of delicious local produce to cook something warming with – I recommend apple crumble and pumpkin soup; both these Autumn dishes give me all the hygge vibes.
#6 – Have an Autumn themed “Self-care Day”
In order to create an enjoyable and hygge “self-care day”, I’d suggest you start by brainstorming a list of your favourite Autumn activities. Remember they can be as simple or extravagant as you like, as long as they bring you joy! For example, I’d love to plan a chill day where I have a fire crackling in the fireplace by the sofa, where I’m reading a good novel with a warming cup of chai tea and some dark chocolate nearby. I’d be wearing some comfy clothes and/or loungewear and having a make-up free day. Of course, this is just a little snapshot of one aspect of the day – you could separate your “self-care day” into fortnightly segments too – one morning, one afternoon, one evening, etc. I’m excited to plan some of these myself!
#7 – Stock up on Warm Drink Ingredient Essentials
“Hygge” is all about warmth, both inside and out, but there is a particular emphasis on physical warmth during Autumn & Winter to combat the outside chill. Hot drinks are a great way to fight the chill, but they are also noted for their positive effects on our mental wellbeing. Like taking a bath, holding a hot drink and feeling the warmth within your body can promote relaxation. Whether you’re a chai latte, hot cocoa or coffee kind of girl, make sure your pantry is stocked up with all the necessary ingredients you need to create these nourishing warming drinks for this Autumn and Winter.
#8 – Host a Cozy Movie Night In
This is a fun and relaxing way to catch up with friends and family after a busy week; and is meant to be stress-free and create positive hygge vibes. Invite your close girlfriends over for a night in at your place, whether it be Friday/Saturday/Sunday, and choose a Netflix film (or two) to watch together. To add to the hygge atmosphere, you might like to light some of your favourite candles, cuddle up on the sofa with warm throws and of course, movie snacks – I’m thinking endless mugs of hot chocolate with mini marshmallows, chocolate and popcorn…
#9 – Take a Bath
Dedicate some “me-time” to nourish yourself at the end of a hectic working week. Light your favourite scented candle, treat yourself with a LUSH bath bomb or epsom salts, and grab your preferred form of entertainment – personally, I enjoy reading in the bath, but you might like to listen to some soothing tunes or a wellbeing podcast, or watch a few episodes of your favourite Netflix series. Very zen…
#10 – Have a Chill Afternoon at the Library
This is a cozy little world that we often underutilise. This Autumn & Winter, take some time to browse and to read all the free magazines curled up in your local library’s reading armchairs and borrow some novels or cookbooks to bring home with you. It’s also a great (and productive) way to start working your way through your reading list.
I hope you enjoyed this post on how to have a hygge Autumn this year! Thank you for reading! Let me know your thoughts and your own personal hygge tips below; I’d be interested to hear your tips and favourite cozy activities.
