A Mix of Feel Good, Thrilling & Uplifting TV Shows I’m loving…

I thought as we’re all spending a lot more time at home due to the current global situation, it might be fun to share the TV shows and films I’ve watched so far this year. There’s quite a mix – some lighthearted reality TV, wholesome Korean dramas, thrillers, a coming-of-age film and a few other genres haha! So hopefully you discover something to enjoy watching whilst you’re at home! 🙂

Terrace House – I recently discovered this Japanese reality TV series through Jasmine Dowling… the show is based around six young men and women (who are all strangers) that move into a house to spend the summer as what Netflix describes as ‘cameras roll’. I’m currently watching the Tokyo 2019-2020 season… I love the beautiful house they’re staying in, the fact that the housemates cook together in the evenings and go out as friends and on dates, and also work whilst they’re living there… overall, I think it’s a cute wholesome show with just the right amount of drama.

Suspicious Partners – I’m also watching this cute Korean drama with some friends on ‘Netflix Party’ at the moment, hehe! Life is upended for a prosecutor after meeting his new intern who becomes a prime murder suspect soon after joining his office… it’s a cute ‘opposites attract’ drama with a sinister thrilling murder mystery sub-plot weaved into the storyline as well. I also love the fashion in this series!

Ozark – If I took a little longer than normal to respond to your messages in the past fortnight, there’s a 99% chance it’s because I was binge watching all three seasons of Ozark (oops!). For give you a brief summary…

This drama series stars Jason Bateman as Marty Byrde, a financial planner who relocates his family from Chicago to a summer resort community in the Ozarks. With wife Wendy and their two kids in tow, Marty is on the move after a money-laundering scheme goes wrong, forcing him to pay off a substantial debt to a Mexican drug lord in order to keep his family safe. While the Byrdes’ fate hangs in the balance, the dire circumstances force the fractured family to reconnect.

The Circle USA – I’d describe this reality series as “Big Brother” meets “Catfish”, because not everything is as it seems… the twist is that the players never meet face-to-face during the competition, because they all live in their own apartments and communicate exclusively through profiles created on a specially designed social media app called ‘The Circle’. It makes for easy-watching and is a lighthearted TV series that’s surprisingly easy to binge watch. I’m excited to watch the French version next!

Mis Americana – I forgot to mention this Taylor Swift documentary in my last Netflix blog post, even though I watched it the day it was released haha! Directed by Lana Wilson, Miss Americana follows Taylor Swift’s life and experiences over the course of several years of her career. I found it fascinating and quite emotional, even though I’ve always been a fan, I learnt a lot from watching her documentary…

Lady Bird – I know this film isn’t new (it was released in 2017), but I recently watched since it’s been licensed by Netflix and I quite enjoyed it. I adore the dynamic between Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet (both on-screen and off-screen), and think they’re both talented young actors.

As for the storyline of this particular film, I think it’s real and raw, which is perhaps why I found it an interesting experience to watch. It’s not a stereotypical girl-meets-boy YA rom-com plot, instead it predominantly focuses on Saoirse’s character’s journey of self-discovery and dealing with everything that young adults go through, including leaving school, family dramas and first love… I also think it’s refreshing that the film doesn’t end with a pretty neat bow, but with a a more realistic ending… I’d be interested to hear what you think!

The Letter For The King – this mini series was released on Netflix in early March, and my younger brother recognised the title from the original book he read, so we thought we’d watch it. In a nutshell, the storyline follows a young squire who holds the fate of the kingdom in his hands as he embarks on a quest to deliver a secret message to the king. I’d describe this as an fantasy/mystical adventure genre…
